Project Description
In this brief but comprehensive guide, we’ll look at how to prepare for natural disasters. Unfortunately, disasters thrown at us by Mother Nature – including heat waves, violent storms, floods, storm tides, hurricanes, forest fires and more – are increasing due to climate change.
You and your family need to ensure you have sufficient survival supplies to weather any disasters or storms that befall your region of the country (or planet). This means stocking up on basic foodstuffs and survival gear that can last you weeks or even months. You’ll also need off-grid power generators to provide electricity should the power grid experience interruptions or go down (like it almost did in Texas during an unprecedented cold snap).
Essential Disaster Supplies
You can either buy a disaster kit already assembled, or put one (or a few) together yourself, sealing items in airtight containers and/or bags. Here are some of the essential disaster supplies you should always have on hand:
- Canned and dried non-perishable food (stored in a sealed, dry and cool location)
- Potable water (enough water for every person for at least one week)
- Flashlights with extra batteries
- Candles
- First aid kit(s)
- Waterproof matches
- A hand-crank radio (or a radio with rechargeable batteries)
- Thick blankets and sleeping bags
- Manual can openers
- Multi-tools (knife, screwdriver, file, etc.)
- Fire extinguishers
- Extra medications (prescription, as well as non-prescription, like aspirin and laxatives)
- Dust masks, duct tape, crowbars, hammer, nails, pliers and adjustable wrenches
- Cell phones with extra batteries and chargers
- A small hatchet and/or saw
- Board games (you might be stuck in one place for a while)
- Pet food (if sheltering with pets)
Portable Generators
In addition to the basic items you’ve gathered for your disaster preparedness checklist, you’ll want to invest in some type of portable generator. And while generators that use solar panels are viable in some options (heat waves, for example), they might not be the best option if the disaster you’re experiencing involves overcast skies pounding your area with golf-ball-sized hailstones or non-stop torrential rain. There will be some sun still, but you want to be sure it’s enough to generate the power you need.
The Inverter Store carries a range of rugged, AIMS portable fuel-efficient generators and other power equipment ideal as emergency backup power sources for when a hurricane, storm, tornado, cold snap, fire or other disaster knocks out the power. With 800-watt, 3200-watt and 6600-watt Portable Pure Sine Inverter Generators – plus plenty of other options – we have different emergency power solutions that can meet your backup energy requirements.
Disaster Home Preparedness
By stocking up on all of the supplies you need for a natural disaster preparedness kit, along with having a preparedness plan that includes letting everyone know where to shelter and find emergency supplies, you will increase your odds of getting through a storm or disaster healthy and intact. Having access to off-grid electricity is also important when prepping for worst-case scenarios – because you never know how long the lights and power will be out for.
